What Is a Keyboard Tester?
A keyboard tester shows what your browser receives when you press a key. If the key name appears, the key works. If nothing appears, the key may be dead, dirty or handled by your operating system. It is useful when you buy a new keyboard, fix an old one or check a laptop after a spill.
How to Test Your Keyboard
- Click the box so it is focused.
- Press any key on your keyboard.
- Read the key name, the key code and the keyCode value shown below the box.
- Repeat for every key you want to check.
What the Results Mean
The box shows the key name, such as Enter or a letter. Below it you will see the key code, which identifies the physical key (for example KeyA or Space), and the older numeric keyCode. These values help gamers and developers confirm which key is being sent.
Why Is a Key Not Showing Up?
Keys like Fn, brightness, volume and power are usually handled by the operating system and may not reach the browser. Shortcuts such as Tab, F5, F12 and anything with Ctrl or Cmd are skipped so the page keeps working. If a normal letter or number does not show, the switch may be worn or blocked by dust.
How to Fix a Faulty Key
Clean around the key with compressed air, try another USB port or cable, and test the keyboard on a second computer. Also check that the right keyboard layout is selected and that Sticky Keys or Filter Keys are turned off in your system settings. If only one key fails on every device, the keyboard itself needs repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tester work on laptops?
Yes. It works with laptop keyboards, desktop keyboards and external USB or Bluetooth keyboards.
Why do Fn and media keys not show?
They are handled by the operating system or keyboard firmware, so the browser often never receives them.
Is anything I type recorded?
No. The tester only shows the key you press while the box is focused, and nothing is uploaded.
Can I test a mechanical keyboard?
Yes. It works with every keyboard type, including mechanical and gaming keyboards.
What is the difference between key and key code?
The key is the character or function produced. The key code identifies the physical key, even if the layout changes.
